Training

Oxfordshire Total Communication is committed to promoting training in Oxfordshire for anyone who lives and/or works with someone with a learning disability.

We can provide:

- An introduction and resource day on how to use Total Communication where you live and work (see below for more information).

- Help with finding and making resources.

- Help with accessing more specific communication workshops such as Makaton or Intensive Interaction.

- An Oxfordshire link network of fellow support workers and carers to share ideas and resources.

Total Communication Introduction and Resource Day

A one day introduction to Total Communication and practical workshops on how to use Total Communication tools and resources.

When: Tuesday 24th April 2011
Where: Liitlemore Mental Health Centre, Sandford Road, Littlemore
Cost: Staff working for providers commissioned by Oxfordshire who work with Oxfordshire customers with Learning Disabilities - Free
Other staff not fitting the above description e.g. working with people outside Oxfordshire - £40
Parent/carers - Free
Staff working with Direct-payment users - Free, providing the worker is not working for commissioned provider
Time: 9.30am to 4.30pm
Who can apply: Anyone who works or lives with someone who has a learning disability and experiences difficulties with communication. Please note: Lunch will not be provided - you can bring your own or purchase food at the shop on site.

You have to have submitted a booking form to attend. Please email Suzanne for a booking form. Please do not assume you have a place unless it has been confirmed. If you attend on the day without having confirmed a place you will be turned away as this course is very popular and we will not be able to accommodate you.

Communication Passport Making Workshops

An opportunity to make a communication passport for an individual with a learning disability with members of our speech and language therapy team.

When: Monday 12th January 1.30pm - 3.30pm (More dates coming soon!)
Where: Slade House, Headington, Oxford, OX3 7JH
Cost: Free (only available for people making a passport for a person who lives in Oxfordshire)

Makaton Beginners Workshops

Makaton was developed as a way to help people to communicate. The signs are taken from British Sign Language and are easy to learn.

Accredited instructor Michelle Staniforth offers a training course in Makaton for parents and carers who would like to learn and use signs more effectively.
